The Blue Herons of Lake Manitou

A few hundred yards from the shores of Lake Manitou in Rochester, Indiana, there sits a small island - actually more like two soggy mounds of earth poking out of the water, with a shallow marsh between them. Very few people ever go there, but the island is home to a sizeable portion of the lake's animal population. Fallen tree branches are often covered with turtles basking in the sun. Ducks and coots swim through and around the dense vegetation. And for much of the summer, the island is home to several large blue herons.
My parents have a house on the lake, and a small two-person pedal-powered boat that is perfect for short excursions. Once during one of my visits, I took my camera and my 200mm lens into the boat with me and pedaled my way out to the island. The herons were going about their business and didn't seem to mind as I approached. In fact, it was almost as if they wanted to show off for me.
