| The arrival of spring at Vanderbilt University always brings the time when students plan where they'll be living in the next school year. The annual housing lottery is where students see their dreams and plans come true, be completely dashed, or something in between. |

| Once the students have chosen their prospective roommates and the resulting groups have been ranked by seniority, fate ultimately rests in the hands of the Dean of Students - in the 19080s, that was Stephen Caldwell (left). Those fortunate enough to be called first (like the coeds on the right) could take their pick of the best dorms on campus. Those less fortunate or with less seniority could only settle for what was left and start dreaming of the next lottery in the following year. |
